How world time & time zones work
World time is based on the idea of a reference line called Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Every region on Earth is offset from UTC by a certain number of hours and minutes (for example UTC−05:00 or UTC+09:00). When it is 12:00 noon at UTC, it will be early morning in the United States, afternoon in Germany, and evening in Japan.
For business users, the most important thing is often the time difference between two locations. For example, New York (UTC−05:00) and London (UTC±00:00) differ by about 5 hours. That means when it is 09:00 in New York it is already 14:00 in London. If you are calling a partner in South Korea (UTC+09:00), there is a 14-hour difference compared with New York, so a comfortable overlap is usually in New York’s late afternoon.
Some countries use Daylight Saving Time (DST) to extend evening daylight in summer. During this period, clocks are typically moved one hour forward compared with standard time. This is why many European and North American cities show two offsets such as “UTC+1 / UTC+2 (DST)” on their country detail pages. When planning calls, always check whether your partner’s country is currently in standard time or daylight time.
Typical use cases for this world time table
- Choosing a meeting time across teams in Europe, Asia and the Americas.
- Planning customer support coverage for global SaaS or e-commerce businesses.
- Scheduling marketing campaigns (email, SMS, calls) by local time in each target country.
- Checking whether it is business hours or night time before calling overseas clients.
- Teaching students or children how time zones and the International Date Line work.
Quick mental rules for time difference
Once you are familiar with the main offsets, simple mental rules are enough in many situations:
- London vs. Central Europe: most of the year, cities like Berlin, Paris and Madrid are 1 hour ahead of London.
- London vs. Beijing: China is usually 8 hours ahead of London.
- New York vs. Tokyo: Tokyo is normally 14 hours ahead of New York when both follow standard time.
- Sydney vs. Singapore: Sydney is often 2–3 hours ahead of Singapore depending on DST in Australia.
FAQ about world time & time zones
How is world time calculated on this page? ▶
Your browser first takes the current UTC time and then adds or subtracts the UTC offset shown in each row (for example UTC+09:00 for Tokyo or UTC−05:00 for New York). All calculations happen locally in your browser; we do not send your time zone or IP address to our servers.
Why can world time be off by one hour in some places? ▶
Many countries in Europe, North America and a few other regions switch between standard time and Daylight Saving Time (DST). This page uses the standard UTC offset for each time zone group. Around the DST switch dates, local clocks may be one hour ahead or behind the value based purely on UTC offset. For critical appointments, confirm the local time on an official website or device configured for that region.
What is the difference between GMT and UTC? ▶
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the modern standard used for most technical and scientific purposes. GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is an older term based on the mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. For most everyday business uses they can be treated as the same (UTC±00:00), but UTC has a more precise definition.
How can I quickly see calling codes and time for a specific country? ▶
Use our country pages as a one-stop reference. Each country profile (for example Canada or Japan) combines international calling codes, number formats, emergency numbers and typical time zones. From there you can jump back to this world time table for more global comparison.
